Equal Rights? Imagine That...

Today, the California Supreme Court sent a clarion message to the country: The benefits of marriage are a CIVIL right that cannot be denied based on sexual orientation. You can read the ruling here. If the ruling unnerves you in any way, just substitute "mixed-race" for "same-sex" and it will become more clear how stupid the current interpretation is.

This is not the final say in CA. There's already going to be a ballot initiative changing the CA constitution to define marriage as ONLY between a man and a woman in November. Unlike many states, a 50% +1 vote is required to pass a state constitutional change. Hard to say right now whether it will pass (a similar measure, that did not seek to change the constitution did pass by about a 60-40 margin) or whether the court will stay its opinion until the vote. You can support the campaign against the initiative here.

It's on these types of issues that CA leads the nation. Which is not to imply that we're always first. Rather, since CA is the most populous state, other states have a hard time ignoring it when we make these changes.

Between this and the general election, November's gonna be a circus. It'll be interesting to see if Obama comes out (pun intended) to oppose the initiative when he comes to CA to use us as an ATM (he won't have to campaign here).
