Sat 8: Friends or Foes

OK, I'm late. What's it to ya?

1. do you have a family member that you cannot stand? who are they, and why?

Hm...probably nothing that strong. But I do have one cousin who is very weasily.

2. have you had a previously-detested family member turn into someone you very much liked (they matured, apologised for a past wrong, etc.)? what happened?

Nope. Though I do find that there are some family members who I like more as time goes on.

3. when was the last time a family member embarrassed you in public? what happened?

Hm...I'm sure my parents did, but I can't think of anything in particular right now.

4. when was the last time YOU did something to embarrass your family in public (or private)?

HAHAHAHAHA...I'm probably the wrong person to ask.

5. what was the last big spat you had with a friend? what happened?

Lynn and I got into a row because she accused me of acting different towards her due to her new bf. I'm think she was projecting. At any rate, we still haven't resolved that.

6. when was the last time a friend was in trouble? were you able to help them out?

I have a friend who's having relationship problems. I don't know if I've helped her, but I'd like to think I've given her a good sounding board to work things out herself.

7. has a friend ever done something very bad (or embarrassing, or possibly illegal?), and left you either holding the bag or left you to clean up the aftermath? are you still friends with that person?

Nope.

8. when was the last time you "got even" with someone? do you regret it?

Revenge and catharsis don't work for me (damnit!), so I don't think I've ever gotten even with someone.

Saturday 8--The Burning

Lola had a friend miss a flight because he got scorched in a tanning bed. So, on that note, here we go...

1. have you ever used a tanning bed? why or why not?

Nope. I'm not that vain. Besides, I tan easily. It's the getting outside enough part that can be tough.

2. do you tan easily, or do you have the red/white only option?

I tan very easily. Must the the Eastern European blood.

3. have you ever had skin cancer, or know anyone who has?

I haven't, but know a few people who have had skin cancer removed. Don't know of anyone who has had it really bad (e.g., died from it or required skin grafts).

4. have you ever had a sunburn so bad, you blistered?

I had them where I've blistered a couple of days later. It's gross, but I LOVE peeling away the skin.

5. when was the last time you burned yourself on something hot?

Hm....that's a tough one. If anything, I've burned my tongue on hot food. I'll occasionally sting my fingers on a hot pan, but nothing particularly bad.

6. when was the last time you attended (or made) a bonfire?

This past summer at Indian Guides camping.

7. do you use spf every day (as in a makeup), or what spf do you use in your suntan lotion?

I'll use spf 30 when I know I'm going to be in the sun for a long time. But, I don't use it every time I go in the sun.

8. where you're at, when will it be warm enough to wear a bathing suit or get some rays?

In LA, the opening day of baseball is the opening day of summer and tanning.

Sat 8--Happy New Year

1. did you go out for new year's this year?

Yes (see previous posts).

2. did you do any travelling during the holidays?

No. I don't mind that I didn't travel around christmas, but miss not hitting the road the week between christmas and New Years.

3. what was the best gift you gave this holiday season?

Donations to a battered women's shelter.

4. the best gift you received?

A sudoku book from the HB.

5. are you off of work on MLK, Jr. day? if so, any plans for the long weekend?

Will take at least half of it off as the HB has it off. No big plans.

6. did you make any new year's resolutions this year? if so, what are they? if not, why not?

No to make any New Year's resolutions. Seriously, I'm not into resolutions. You just gotta live your life and make changes when you need to.

7. a look back - what was the best thing about 2007?

Making new friends.

8. a look back - what was the worst thing about 2007?

Mine and Lynn's friendship going to hell in a handbasket.

Sat 8

OK, I'm late. I don't give a shit.

Lola
just moved at work (sixth time in 16 months), and i'll be moving into our new house next year.

1. when was the last time you moved from one home to another?

June, 1999 from MA to CA.

2. when was the last time you moved at work?

Same as I work out of my house.

3. have you ever had any problems with a hired mover?

No. I've found them good and professional.

4. one day at work, i was given less than 24 hours to move my desk. what was the shortest amount of time you've had to move in?

Several months.

5. in your house, what would be the hardest item to move and why?

The sofa and fridge in the family room. The doorways are a bit narrow and not very tall. So, big objects can't get in or out easily. When we moved in the sofa (the fridge was already here) we had to pop out large window.

6. at your office/work, what would be the hardest item to move and why?

My file cabinet because it's big and heavy.

7. if you had to move at work, describe your perfect office location (guinness taps optional!).

Over looking my yard and the ocean.

8. if you had to move your home, describe your perfect home location. good schools? pub withing staggering-home distance?

GREAT schools, ocean or city view, good friends within walking distance.

Sat 8: Jobs (I'm soooo late on this)

1. what was your worst job? why?

Doing early am prep at a restaurant. The owners were assholes.

2. what was your best job? why?

Besides the one I have now? The summer between my junior and senior year in college I drove deliveries. Not UPS, but documents, etc. I got to listen to music in my car all day, go see my friends during breaks, and learned LA like the back of my hand. Plus, now I can parallel park like nobody's business.

3. are you looking for a new job now?

Some more work, yes. New job, no.

4. when did you get the job you have now? if you're unemployed, how long have you been without a job?

A little more than two years ago when I left my previous firm.

5. have you ever been fired from a job? what happened?

Nope, but I have been fired by clients when things haven't gone as they had expected (not too often). I think I've fired as many clients as clients have fired me.

6. have you ever had a horrible, back-stabbing colleague?

No.

7. have you heard of or ever been involved in a an office scandal at your work?

No--I work for myself so I don't have to deal with that drama.

8. what's your dream job?

What I have now, with less selling.

Sat 8: Gadgets

do you have any of the following gadgets, and what kind? when did you get them?

1. cellphone?

Yes...lemme see...1997.

2. digital camera?

Yes, 1999.

3. video camera?

Yes, 1999.

4. video game console?

Yes, it was a gift for the HB. I'm going to say 2004.

5. TiVo/DVR?

Oh HELL YES. 2000.

6. mp3 player/iPod?

Yup (mp3). 2002 was my first.

7. laptop computer?

Can't live without it....1995 or so.

8. any widget or app on your phone or computer to makes your life easier (commute time calculator, on-time flight alert, zocdoc, etc.)?

None that I can think of...I'm not a big extra app person.

Sat 8: Mail

Courtesy of my most loyal reader, and wonderful friend, Lola.

when was the last time:

1. you got money in the mail?

Last week. Since I run my biz out of my house, this is a fairly frequent occurrence.

2. you sent a letter?

I'm assuming this means a written letter to a person, as opposed to mailing a contract, etc. So, that would be in November of last year when I sent one to Lynn.

3. you received a package?

Today...a Pokemon watch for the HB.

4. you purchased stamps?

About three weeks ago.

5. you had to wait in line at the post office?

Three weeks ago...I needed something postmarked that day (quarterly taxes).

6. you talked to your mail carrier?

I said hello to him the other day...does that count?

7. you didn't get your mail because somebody blocked your mailbox, you missed a mail/package delivery, your mail was delivered to the wrong place, etc.

Never.

8. you gave your mail carrier a gift? what was it?

Not that I recall.

Saturday 8

when was the last time:

1. a restaurant was out of the food you wanted?

Cannot remember that ever happening (I must be very flexible when it does).

2. you were dumped/divorced by a significant other/spouse?

Hm...the wife and I have been together a looooong time. Lemme think....while there were certainly some minor ones in the meantime, I would say when Lynn kicked me to the curb back in HS.

3. you were denied a promotion?

Never worked for someone, so that hasn't happened. Before going solo I was trying to negotiate a partnership deal with my other firm, but I was the one who walked away.

4. you didn't get the job you applied for?

See above.

5. a friend cancelled a lunch date (or other meeting) on you?

An old gf was visiting with her family last month. She and I were going to get together for lunch at a cool place, but one of her cherubs got sick. We ended up having breakfast at a Denny's a couple of days later.

6. someone took credit for something YOU did?

Making my clients look good is what I do. If they take ALL the credit it's kinda bothersome, but I'm there to help them get shit done.

7. an appliance (or something in your home) broke?

Right now my washer is making WAY too much noise.

8. you were denied something credit-related? (loan, credit card, a rental, etc.)

Only when my card's expired. The wife and I have sterling (800+) credit, so we can buy the shit we want (which isn't much, too be honest).

Saturday 8

when was the last time you...

1. went to the doctor? why did you have to go?

to get my yearly bloodwork done...my cholesterol is through the roof.

2. had surgery? for what?

Three years ago when I had my vasectomy.

3. visited someone in the hospital? who was it?

Each year the HB and I bring Halloween candy to kids at the local pediatric ward.

4. took a prescription medication? for what?

Painkillers after some dental work about a year ago.

5. injured any part of your body? what were you doing?

About 4 years ago I fractured my nose and elbow in a bike riding accident.

6. ate something that gave you food poisoning? what was it?

I cannot remember the last time I had food poisoning.

7. had a cold/allergies?

I'm sure I had a cold last winter. I don't seem to have allergies.

8. did NOT heed a doctor's advice? what did you ignore/do differently?

I've had good luck with doctors, so I tend to listen to them.

Sunday, August 19, 2007

Saturday 8

who was the last person you sent a:

1. holiday card (of any type)?

Lynn...probably for a Wicca holiday earlier in the year.

2. birthday card?

My wife.

3. sympathy card?

My uncle after his wife/my aunt died earlier in the year.

4. email?

I guy in my Rotary Club.

5. snail-mail letter?

Three people in my Rotary club who don't have e-mail.

6. package in via post?

Lynn's son's birthday present.

7. thank-you note or email?

Someone in my community who thanked the Rotary Club for a grant.

8. a blistering voicemail?

Not my style, though I did leave on for a client indicating that if she wanted her project done on time she had better get me a particular set of data ASAP.

(Last) Saturday 8

1. hairstyle?

Hm....that's a good one....I guess it depends on what you mean by change. Length of sideburns or hair? If so, than 6 months ago. How I brush it? Ages ago.

2. residence?

8 years, 1 month.

3. your job?

Well, my job didn't really change, but I left my old firm and started my own two years ago.

4. your significant other?

It will be 24 years in November.

5. your circle of friends?

I wouldn't say it changes much, but it does evolve over time.

6. your favourite food? and what was the new discovery?

I'm always experimenting with new dishes. I would say the orzo salads worked their way into my life last summer.

7. your favourite vacation spot? and why should we go?

5 years ago we took the HB to Yosemite for the first time. You should go (and should either stay in a nice place like the Ahwahnee or the Tenaya Lodge or backpack, don't stay in the campgrounds which are way too crowded) because the park contains some of the true rock stars of nature. You'll never forget it.

8. your favourite movie or television show ... from what to what?

Saturday, July 21, 2007

Saturday 8

1. who was your first crush?
Yikes...I honestly cannot remember her name...but it will come to me.

2. do you currently have a crush on someone?
Hm...no.

3. what makes a crush a CRUSH to you? the fact that it's possibly unrequited? or that you can actually get the person at a later date?
Since in other contexts the word crush is destructive, I think that a crush has to be damaging to one's heart. So, I would think unrequited.

4. who are your celebrity crushes?
None

5. have you ever crushed on a boss? did anything come of it?
No, but, then again, I've never had a boss.

6. have you ever crushed on a teacher? describe what made you fawn over them.
Yes, in 3rd grade. I just thought she was sooooooo beautiful.

7. many people have met a spouse/fiance(e) at work. have you ever crushed on a co-worker, and how did that turn out?
Never really had co-workers, though did on some who I went to grad school with (which is kinda like co-workers). One was great for a while, but didn't turn out well. I guess I slept with the others. So, based on my response above, they weren't really crushes.

8. have you ever crushed on a personal trainer, a work-out buddy, or a member of your sports team? what happened?
Never have.

Saturday 8 (but on time this week!)

1. how did you spend your July 4 holiday?

Not a mystery if you read the blog, but...watched cartoons with the HB in the morning, then he and I rode on the fire truck in our local 4th of July parade. The three of us went out for lunch and did shitsky around the house in the afternoon. We went to my s-i-l's for bbq and lighting of fireworks.

2. what was your most memorable July 4 holiday?

As a kid, I remember watching Wimbledon in the morning, going to a party in the afternoon and lighting fireworks that night. Oh, I ended up drinking a case of beer that day and getting laid. Does that count? This year's was memorable because the HB got to light fireworks and he was VERY excited.

3. which July 4 holiday would you seriously like to forget?

Y'know, I can't think of one (maybe I did a really good job of forgetting it).

4. aside from wednesday, which i hope you took off, did you take any other day off this week?

Nope, in fact, just the opposite. Our original plan was for the HB to be out of camp and we'd have a family week. But, with all of my travels and the wife's workload, it just didn't work out that way.

5. today in london, bands are performing 18 hours for Live Earth. some of the lineup includes madonna, the beastie boys, spinal tap, metallica, james blunt, with a final 'stop' - a performance in new jersey with the police (wh00t!), alicia keys, smashing pumpkins, and bon jovi. nbc will air a 3-hour primetime special tonight, bravo will air 18 hours of live coverage, seven hours on CNBC, and other coverage on sundance, telemundo, and universal HD. do you plan on watching any of the Live Earth coverage on TV? why or why not?

Nope, don't plan on watching it (which doesn't mean I won't) because:

a) except for metallica, I'm not really into the bands listed.
b) it seems kinda goofy to watch TV and burn carbon in an effort to save the earth. If they really wanted to prevent global warming, all of those artists should run their concert gear from solar/wind power for a year and travel in low emission cars/buses. None of this "Oh, we bought carbon credits crap" because there's no evidence that buying those credits actually reduces the green house gases released.

6. speaking of the police, i will be seeing them this week in concert. for me, this is the mothership of concerts as i've seen every single one of sting's concerts since 1985. if you had a chance to see ANY band, dead or alive, broken up or still together, who would it be ... and why?

Led Zeppelin, because they are the greatest rock-and-roll band I didn't see.

7. is there any food that you are ashamed to admit you eat, and why?
Nope, though I do have some guilty pleasures;-)

8. some people are divided over global warming. obviously, people are making an impact due to population and emissions, but how much of it is cyclical? this week researchers have found that greenland was really green, whereas last year people were concerned because it was becoming greener by the day. are you very concerned about global warming, or do you feel it's more hype than anything? why or why not?

I believe that the earth's climate is always changing and did before we evolved. I don't know what the perfect climate is for the earth, but it's a pretty safe bet that every change (such as ice ages) has led to winners (hey, there's more area on the earth that supports my species!) and losers (hey, it's colder than it used to be...where's all the food?).

I find it hard to believe that human activity has not had an impact on our climate, as would the explosion of any species that has the capability of changing its environment. Whether it's cutting down forests, increasing the number of domesticated animals that fart, or putting pollutants in the air, these things must have some effect. Whether it's large or small, I'm unsure.

I think what's missing from the global warming argument is that even if human activity has NO affect on climate, don't you think it's a good idea to pollute less? Don't you think that cleaner air is better for us and makes it easier to grow food? Don't you think that less pollutants in our water is beneficial? Don't you think burning less oil means less dependence on countries who are not our friends and will lead to fewer wars?

Saturday 8

1. do you have an exercise routine currently?

I'm good for 30 minutes a day. I prefer to go for a bike ride at the beach, but I also have a NordicTrak for days when the weather or work won't allow for the ride.

2. what's the most amount of money per month that you would pay for a gym?

$0. I think they are a waste.

3. have you ever been unable to exercise, for instance, due to an injury, lack of funds or time, etc.?

I've had issues with my back being really tight. But a physical therapist gave me some great stretches which has really gotten rid of the problem.

4. have you ever had a friend or family member that exercised TOO much, to the point that they were anorexic (or very, very close)?

No, unless you count Nicole Richie;-)

5. have you ever exercised too much, to the point where it was unhealthy?

Naw....I'm not that much of a fanatic.

6. have you ever had a negative experience at a gym (with other patrons, equipment, trainer) or with the gym themselves (billing, closings, etc.)?

No.

7. one form of exercise that seems bizarre to me is spinning as i cannot understand sitting on a stationary bike for an hour with some little skinny bitch screaming at you from HER stationary bike. what form of exercise do you not 'get' or would never try because it seems too weird to you?

I could never get behind aerobics because the music is like knives in my ear. Oh, the fashion aspect is just too over the top.

8. if you had two free, dedicated hours each day to do something athletic that would NOT take away from work, friends, or family time, and the unlimited funds to do it, what type of exercise would you do daily? lipo, by the way, does not count... ;)

Hm....either biking or hiking.

Saturday, May 26, 2007

Saturday 8

1. who's the oldest living member of your family?
My great uncle Jay, who I believe is 95.

2. who's the newest?
My cousin's twins who are about 6 mos.

3. if you could spend a two-week vacation with one family member, who would it be?
My Uncle Sam (and we get a week with him and his wife in June).

4. the old saying goes, "you can pick your friends, but you cannot pick your family." if you could choose one of your friends, who would you 'elect' to become a member of your family?
Joe, who was best man at my wedding.

5. who in your family can you just NOT stand?
My cousin Steve.

6. do you have a member of the family who is currently suffering an illness? (i'm going for physical illness here, but feel free to talk about the batshit-crazy ones, too)
Yes, my aunt (my mom's youngest sister) who had a stroke a few years ago (I've blogged about her) just found out that she has encapsulated cancer in her lung. No telling what they'll be able to do for her.

7. do you have a family member that you've lost contact with? who are they, and why do you not currently have contact?
Several, but mostly because my mom has such a large family that it's impossible to keep track of them all.

8. do you have any famous family members?
Not in the movie-star sense, but one of my mom's cousins was a big muckety-muck at the Harvard Business School. If you've taken business courses you've probably read one or more of his articles.

Sat 8: Summertime

  1. what is the best memory you have of a day that was absolutely freezing and
cold? include all the important stuff like when and where and how
you ended up there and why and so forth.

Two winters ago we were in Philly during the 100 year snow storm. My aunts live about a half a mile away from each other. We were at a party at one's, but staying at the other's. Walking back in the snow, the HB and I had a great time.

  2. what is your best memory of a rainy day you have spent in your life?
    spare us no details!

Rainy day....hm...I live in LA, so not that many. Can't recall any great sex while it was thundering and lighting at JUST the right time, or anything like that.

  3. what is your best memory of a day where it was blistering hot?

In Vegas with some friends getting drunk and making a bunch of money at the tables.

  4. what is the weirdest weather phenomenon you can remember experiencing anywhere?

When I lived in Tennessee the sky turned green one day. I called a friend of mine who lived in the same building to point this phenomenon out to him. He responded, "Yeah, when I lived in Kansas this is what the sky looked like before a tornado hit." Fortunately, we were spared that little piece of sunshine.

  5. what type of weather can you NOT stand?

Constant heat and humidity (obviously, Florida is not in my future).

  6. the opposite of question 5... what is the best type of weather for you?

80 degrees, sunny with a nice breeze.

  7. have you visited a place that has the ideal climate for you, and would you move there at any time in your life?

I live there...Los Angeles. San Diego's in the same category, but I'd rather live in LA. Santa Barbara's close, but a little cooler.

  8. not quite weather-related ... do you have seasonal allergies?

    Fortunately, not.

Saturday 8: Personality

  1. when was the last time a person was able to make you very happy (non-sexually, ahem) and what did that person do to make you smile?

The HB today when he was screaming with joy while we were on a roller coaster today.

  2. when was the last time that a person seriously pissed you off and what did they do?

Lynn for failing to acknowledge something I gave her.

  3. when was the last time an individual made you know that your were loved beyond a shadow of a doubt, and how did they show it?

Lynn, when she came to see me in Nashville (though it didn't work out so well), even though she's very involved with someone else.

  4. when was the last time an individual guaranteed (via action or words) that they would never care about you again?

Lynn, when I was in college and ran into her where she was working (this Sat 8 seems to be revealing a trend).

  5. do you still care about that person, even a little bit?

    Alas, yes

  6. when was the last time that an individual totally did something that absolutely confused you, and what was it?

    Hm...I cannot recall.

  7. when was the last time a person made you feel 'sexy,' and how did they accomplish that?

My wife, a couple of nights ago. Lots of touching and teasing before a tremendous hummer.

  8. when was the last time someone made you question your belief system(s), and how did you react?

I'm rock-solid in what I believe. The last time was probably when I was 10, or something.

Saturday, April 14, 2007

Saturday 8

1. who was the last person close to you that passed away?

My grandmother, about eight and a half years ago.

2. whose funeral did you last attend?

A neighbor who lived across the street. It was cool because among the attendees were people who lived in our neighborhood a long time ago. I heard some good stories about the house I own and the people who previously lived in it.

3. are you planning on being cremated (keith richards jokes aside)?

Yes.

4. do you have any special concessions for your funeral/wake, etc.?

No one should leave sober and/or with a frown on his/her face. No religious overtones shall be present or implied.

5. are you sensitive or allergic to anything outdoors?

Not too bad. Thought I do tend to attract mosquitoes.

6. do you share an allergy or condition with a close member of your family that the rest do not have?

No that I know of (I'm not allergic to much).

7. last night, i was awoken by a huge spider crawling all over my FACE. when was the last time you were woken by a bug or spider?

8. it's been in the upper 80s, but we're getting a cold snap and back in the 40s tomorrow. how's your weather going lately?

Saturday, April 7, 2007

Saturday 8 (but on time this week!)

1. are you a religious person?

I'm a 24/7 practicing athiest.

2. are you a spiritual person?

No, but several people claim that I am.

3. were you raised in a religious household?

Yes.

4. have you/do you/would you raise your children in a religious household?

I have not and will not. He can make his own choice about those things when he's older. However, I do expose him to religion and we speak about it regularly.

5. Are you mistaken for being older or younger than you truly are?

Usually for being a few years younger than I am.

6. Do you and your significant other appear to be significantly younger or older than each other?

Nope. We're nearly the same age and I think we both look appropriate for it.

7. there is an agency called the american association of anti-aging medicine that is dedicated to the advancement of therapeutics related to the science of longevity medicine. would you consult such an agency or other medical office for supplements, advice, etc. to help you increase your longevity?

Only if it included my brain lasting longer. Alzheimer's runs in my family and if they can't fix that there's not point in me living past 80.

8. OT ... what are you doing for fun this weekend?

I'm recovering from a cold, so not a whole lot. I'll play with the HB and my cousin's kids and watch the Masters and some baseball.

Sunday, April 1, 2007

Saturday 8 (late, as usual)

1. are you currently married?

Yes.

2. have you been married in the past, but are currently divorced from that person?

No.

3. when was the last wedding you attended?

My friend Scott's in San Diego.

4. have you ever been a groomsman or in a bridal party?

Yup, for my best man Joe.

5. do you support same-gender marriages? why or why not?

Yes, because gay people should be as miserable as us breeders. No, that's not it. Marriage is an expression of one person's love for another. Why should that be illegal? I can see how some churches wouldn't sanction it (nor should they be forced to), but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be legal.

6. what was the most fun you've ever had at a wedding?

My cousin Michelle's. It was the first and only time I got together with my brother and 10 cousins as adults and we had a blast.

7. what's been the worst experience you've ever had at a wedding?
